During the annual address delivered by Pope Francis to the members of the Diplomatic Corps accredited to the Holy See, I had the privilege, as The Palestinian Ambassador to the Holy See, to show His Holiness, a photo where President Joe Biden knelt in prayer in the Nativity Church in Bethlehem in July 2022, holding the rosary, as a faithful Catholic.
With this background, I urged Pope Francis to call on President Biden for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. Reading today’s statement released by President Biden, to mark 100 days of the war waged on Gaza, focusing purely on the Israeli hostages and their families, and ignoring completely the tremendous suffering and deep pain of the Palestinian innocent civilians, I felt how passive and naive I was. This makes me ask myself again who benefits from this biased policy. Still, our strong faith in God will no doubt bring justice and peace to our people.
